Been working on a thing …
It’s been pretty quiet around here on the writing front. Keeping up my current products (Probly and VWM) and a number of new experiments has taken up a lot of time. But the majority of the year has been spent on a big new project. Hey! is a team coordination platform for sports and activities. In the real world I'm a parent and a coach, and I've seen how hard communication and coordination can be within groups. Whether it’s email and GCal or apps and platforms built for the purpose, the current solutions are fragmented, filled with ads, or more interested in things like streaming or stats.
If you’ve coached a team, or led a group, you know the pattern: you send out an important update and it’s immediately buried under replies. Attendance, rosters, signups, and more all on different platforms that don’t talk to each other, and everything eventually ends up in a Google Sheet somewhere (who actually owns the file, and when is their kid graduating?). Parents know the other side of this. Every team has a different platform and communication method, none of the calendars talk to each other, and getting a full view of your schedule is a ton of work. Showing up to the right field at the right time is a huge PITA (now that it’s fall, have practices moved earlier yet?) .
So I’m building Hey! to scratch my own itch. It has a dedicated feed for team announcements so they don’t get buried under replies. It has shared child accounts so parents can manage their kids’ schedules easily, and threaded calendars so they can see every practice or meeting for all their kids in the same view. It makes volunteering easier, and ties into the rest of the event info. Those are just the headlines. Everything from managing team invites to child safety has been built with coaches’ and players’ needs in mind, all in a single platform.
